    Don Robb


    AV-ED began in 1977 when Don Robb, company president and Chief Flight Instructor, retired from the US Air Force and decided to channel his passion for aviation in a new direction. After obtaining his Ph.D. from George Washington University with a dissertation on aviation safety education, Dr. Robb – a soaring enthusiast – incorporated the AV-ED Ground School and started with glider ground schools at NOVA and Montgomery College.

    Dr. Robb’s association with the Leesburg Airport began in 1981, when he joined forces with the owner of Janelle Aviation, then the FBO at Leesburg. From 1981 until 1993, Dr. Robb ran the AV-ED Ground School (then based in Falls Church) and served as Chief Flight Instructor for Janelle’s flight school. When Janelle departed the Leesburg Airport in late 1992, Dr. Robb acquired some of Janelle’s aircraft and established AV-ED Flight School in January 1993.

    Since then, AV-ED Flight School has expanded its initial fleet of three airplanes – two C-152s and one C-172P – into a fleet of more than two-dozen new and well-maintained training and rental airplanes. The fleet includes primary trainers, high performance and complex aircraft, and two Piper Seminoles for multi-engine training. In keeping with Dr. Robb’s strong belief in the training value of simulators, AV-ED also has two ATC-710 simulators and a state-of-the-art Frasca 142 simulator, which is housed at the AV-ED ground school facility in Leesburg. AV-ED employs approximately 35 instructors and has more than 200 active students.

    AV-ED Flight School maintains excellent relations with the Town of Leesburg, from whom it leases airport terminal space and tiedowns.
